LFT material - the new force of automotive interior in the future

lft is a new advanced lightweight material in the field of fiber-reinforced polymers. It has the characteristics of designability, low density, high specific strength, high specific modulus and strong impact resistance. Its emergence poses a great challenge to aluminum alloy and fiber-reinforced thermosetting composites, and gradually becomes the mainstream material for making automotive parts

lft is the abbreviation of long fiber reinforcement thermoplastic in English, which is translated into long fiber reinforced thermoplastic in Chinese. It is also used to turn the hand wheel of the workbench. It is often called long fiber reinforced thermoplastic composite. It is a new advanced lightweight material in the field of fiber reinforced polymers

in the past 20 years, the energy crisis and the rise in oil prices have made the lightweight of vehicles gradually become the development trend of new vehicles, and people have also shifted their attention to the research and development of LFT low-density materials. The material properties and processing technology of LFT have also been continuously improved

at present, LFT has become a new lightweight automotive material that can challenge aluminum alloy and fiber-reinforced thermosetting composites, and has strong market competitiveness of Rockwell hardness scale. It is reported that in recent years, the market share of automotive products manufactured with LFT has increased by about 15% and maintained a strong upward trend, which has attracted great attention of professionals in the industry

what is LFT

LFT is a generalized special term for plastics. In the automotive composite industry, there is an informal but conventional definition, that is, products made by mixing reinforcement fibers (generally glass fibers) with a length of more than 10mm and thermoplastic polymers (generally polypropylene). For example, GMT (glass mat reinforcement thermal), lft-g (long fiber reinforcement thermal granules), lft-d (long fiber reinforcement thermal direct) and so on all belong to the LFT category, with low density, high specific strength, high specific modulus and strong impact resistance

the mechanical properties of LFT materials are related to the material properties and proportion of reinforcing fibers. LFT reinforcing fiber for automobile is usually glass fiber. Theoretically, the proportion of this kind of glass fiber in products can reach 10% - 80% (refers to the weight ratio), but in fact, the proportion of commonly used glass fiber must ensure that the oil pump is normally 20% - 40% under the condition of no vibration. In addition, the mechanical properties of LFT are also closely related to the length of reinforcing fibers. Compared with similar short fiber (fiber length is less than 1mm) reinforced injection molding thermoplastic composites, LFT materials have been greatly improved in strength, impact resistance and energy absorption. Therefore, these characteristics also create conditions for the application of LFT in the structural and semi-structural parts of the interior and exterior of vehicles with more stringent requirements, and become one of the main reasons favored by the automotive industry
